Recently Opened Parks

Rigewood Park

Newark’s first park for people with autism and special needs. Located at the corner of Ridgewood Avenue and West Bigelow Street, Ridgewood Park includes sensory play equipment, a rubber safety surface, a colored concrete sidewalk, backless and circular benches for seating for parents, and trees for shade. Fairmount Heights Children’s Village Park:

In August of 2024, Fairmount Heights Children’s Village Park in Newark’s’ West Ward reopened. Renovations at the park include new amenities such as splashpads, play equipment, and chess tables. The success of the project is a result of a collaboration between City, LISC-NJ, the Fairmount Heights Neighborhood Association, the Urban League of Essex County, and resident leaders. Chamblee Square Park

In April, 2024 the City of Newark opened Chamblee Square Park located at 556-560 Hunterdon Street. The park, named in honor of Reverend Ernest Lee Chamblee, provides the neighborhood with play structures, water features, and a fitness zone. The surrounding neighborhood previously lacked a playground within a 10-minute walk. Learn more about Chamblee Square Park here.

Planned Parks

Branch Brook Park Overlook

A gathering space within the one-mile Newark segment of the planned Greenway connecting eight towns in Essex and Hudson counties. The Overlook will include lawn and picnic space, views of Branch Brook Park, and native plantings. Groundbreaking for the Newark portion of the Greenway is planned for 2025. Broadway Park

Broadway Park, in Newark’s North Ward, is an abandoned two-acre green space. The Trust for Public Land, in partnership with the City of Newark, is in the process of revitalizing the park to make it a vibrant and welcoming community space. Once completed, 10,850 Newark residents will live within a 10-minute walk of the park. Learn more about the Broadway Park Project here.
